Date: 29-30 May 2026
The Tanqua Kuru Bicycle Race returns to the Tankwa Karoo this May with its intentionally capped field of just 100 riders, reinforcing its reputation as one of South Africa’s most curated endurance events. Now in its sixth year, the two-day gravel race blends demanding desert terrain with high-production “theatre” elements — earning its nickname, the Cycling Circus of the Karoo. Past editions have featured desert activations, aerial displays and the now-iconic Bicycle Burn, with organisers promising the largest edition yet in 2026. Rather than scaling participation, race organiser Jeremy Crowder says the focus remains on deepening the experience. This year includes an exclusive Sling Aircraft aerial activation, extending the event’s immersive narrative beyond the saddle. With endurance tourism gaining traction, Tanqua Kuru continues to position itself as a boutique destination race where performance meets spectacle in one of South Africa’s most dramatic landscapes.
