On Sunday, 15 February, nearly 4,000 cyclists lined for the up 37th Dis-Chem Ride for Sight knowing it wouldn’t be a routine ride as the wind had its say and the distances were farther than ever. However, the energy on the road was unmistakable.

The Super Classic extended to 125km, demanding smart pacing, resilience, and real endurance from the front of the field to the final finishers.

The 62km Challenge delivered speed and strategy, with a competitive edge that kept the pace honest from start to finish. The new 10km Fun Ride sold out early, signalling something important: Ride for Sight continues to grow, evolve, and welcome new riders into the fold.

Whether you were chasing seeding, testing early-season form, riding socially, or simply showing up because this event holds its place on your calendar, you were part of a day that felt bigger than the sum of its distances, and it showed.

This year’s Ride for Sight demanded more and the field delivered,” states Race Director, Linsay Engelbrecht.

Unmistakable riding spirit

“Despite testing conditions, the spirit on the road was unmistakable. Ride for Sight continues to earn its place as a serious seeding event and a proud fixture on South Africa’s cycling calendar. We can’t wait to welcome you back to the start line,” adds Engelbrecht.

The record growth in the event, with participation increasing by 35%, as nearly 4,000 cyclists lined up on the start line.

In a powerful demonstration of teamwork and competitive spirit, approximately 60 para-cyclists and their pilots lined up together.

When the racing was done, Christian Klopper successfully defended his men’s title while Lucy Young returned with determination to claim victory in the women’s race after finishing second in 2025.

The race organisers repaired more than 200 potholes, laid 2.8 tons of asphalt, and deployed additional marshals to ensure stronger safety measures were in place, and full R554 road closure ensured a safer ride for all.

Beyond the Ride

As Retina SA’s flagship fundraiser, Ride for Sight continues to deliver meaningful financial impact, raising over R500,000 in 2026

Funds raised support access to genetic diagnosis, research participation, and emerging treatments for individuals living with retinal conditions.

“The 37th Dis-Chem Ride for Sight was truly inspiring. Beyond the electric atmosphere, it was the continued generosity and commitment of the cycling community that stood out most,” comments Chairperson of Retina South Africa, Sonya Lee Mahabeer.

“We remain dedicated to strengthening advocacy, accessibility, and inclusion for people living with retinal conditions and this event plays a powerful role in advancing that mission.”
